Can I use Panama Jack cooling gel on my Horse?
Cooling gels only trick superficial nerve receptors to create a sensation of cooling, while doing nothing to actually reduce inflammation by constricting blood vessels as cold hosing and ice packs do. You should apply cold for 15 minutes with at least an hour or two in between applications. If you leave the cold on for too long, the effects reverse and it is counterproductive. You can wrap a bag of frozen peas in stockinette or a pillowcase and hold it against the hock for 15 minutes max, or just run a cold hose to it. Don't apply ice directly to the skin over the injury which can freeze and crystalize water in the tissues. Keep the horse confined on soft, thick bedding and get the vet there asap. I would not medicate with any antiinflammatory or analgesic without direction from the vet to do so. Relieving pain and inflammation can lead to the horse bearing weight and worsening the injury, and also can mask signs and symptoms the vet will need to observe in evaluationg the injury. This includes application of topical products. Just keep the horse confined and apply cold and let the vet do any other prescribing of treatment. The vet may want it kept wrapped in which case he/she will teach you how to do it correctly and advise you on what supplies you may need to purchase.
